Trevor Brown is an Australian musician, composer, improviser, sound designer, lecturer and radio presenter whose diverse career has spanned from symphony orchestra to outback circus to festival director.

His work crosses  between classical, jazz, improvised, new music, sound design and electronic music with deep roots in and reseatrch in traditional musics from around the world.

He has performed, produced and composed works for  the Sydney Opera House, MONA and DARK MOFO, headlined at Woodford Festival, performed at Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Darwin Festivals.

In Europe, tours regularly as a soloist and various projects in UK, Italy, Germany, Austria and Croatia. He has been featured artist at Ars Electronica, Porec Jazz Festival, and many other festivals in Italy, Croatia, Slovenia.

He worked with the London, Vienna, and Berlin Improvisers Orchestras, and is the artistic director of  the Sydney Improvisers Composers Kollektiv Orchestra, the only orchestra of it’s kind in Australia.

Trevor is currently the Artist in Residence for for the Whites Creek Cottage for 2022, offered by the Inner-West Council.

Mona’s Trees

A work commissioned by the Dark Mofo Feast as part of 2015 Festival. Played in surround sound during the festival. Based on ongoing work exploring psychogeophysicial responses to decades of collected field recordings of Australian soundscapes.

Trevor Brown CV

Trevor Brown is a freelance composer, sound designer, director, producer and radio presenter who works across several artistic and cultural fields and disciplines and has more than thirty years of professional experience in the international arena.

He studied composition with Andrew Ford, Andrew Shultze and Jonathon Harvery, flute with Prue Page, and later at the Royal College of Music, Lodon.

He works extensively across Australia and tours annually to Europe with a range of solo and collaborative projects.

He is the Artistic Director of the Sydney Improvisers Composers Kollektiv Orchestra and is currently lecturing in Improvisation/Composition  at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, previously lecturing at RMIT where he was also course coordinator of Performance Studies.

In 2022, Trevor curated the sound art program for Cementa Festival, the music program for the Greenway Festival, conducting regional tours with the Sydney Improvisers Composers Kollektiv Orchestra, and received dunding for various musical initiatives across Sydney and NSW.

Trevor has decades of experience in all aspects of culture creation, from designing and producing large budget corporate events to creating artistic projects, tours, events and festivals at  the Sydney Opera House Studio, Art Gallery of NSW, Seymour Centre, Sea Theatre Festival, Performance Space, Eternity Playhouse and Alpha Gallery.

As a performer, composer or musical director he has played every major festival in Australia.

He has composed music for film, dance, circus ,theatre, radio, spoken word and sound installations, including STC, Belvoir St, Bangarra, Dance North, Circus Oz, AGNSW, Australian Museum, MONA, DARK MOFO, ABC and JJJ.

He has worked with several major ensembles in Europe including Markus Stockhausen’s Intuitive Music Orchestra in Köln, he has performed and conducted the London Improvisers Orchestra, and has played with the Vienna and Berlin Improvising Orchestras.

Trevor is also a respected after community project organizer for more than 25 years, was a team leader for Music Outback Foundation, working with remote indigenous communities across NT, SA and NSW, as well as community projects working with disadvantaged and special needs organizations.
